What is a Solar Hot Water System?

A solar hot water heater uses the sun's abundant energy to heat water. Today's Solar Dynamics Hot Water System will provide all the hot water you need. It is simple and reliable technology using the basic laws of physics. The most reliable solar hot water system is the convection flow unit. With this unit, the tank is installed at the higher end of the collector. It's reliable and safe and produces the maximum hot water. Where there is a preference for the tank to be installed at ground level, a PV/DC method is used. In this, a Photovoltaic panel produces direct current to a DC pump for the circulation of the water between the tank and the collector.

How much do I save with Solar Dynamics?

Your monthly savings will depend on the amount of hot water you use, storage tank size and type and cost of energy. For a family of four, the typical hot water usage is 80-gallons per day, thus using 4200-kilowatt-hours per year to heat the water electrically, or US$630 per year worth of electricity at 15¢ per kilowatt hour.

A Solar Dynamics Hot Water System will save 99% of the hot water portion of the monthly utility bill.

With a Solar Dynamics Hot Water System, your backup electrical booster is left in the OFF position.

Do I have to change my habits to use a Solar Dynamics Hot Water System?

No. Solar Dynamics Hot Water Systems are designed to satisfy all your hot water needs. Right sized, you can use the hot water when you need it throughout your home. Install the system that is right for your needs and you'll always have hot water for the whole family. Remember, 30 gallons per person at maximum planned occupancy.

Does Government offer any financial incentives?

Yes. The Governments of Barbados and St. Lucia allow tax deductions on the purchase of a solar water heater. The Barbados experience is that the national savings of energy far outweigh the value of the incentive given. When avoided green house emissions and environmental considerations are added, tax incentives make sense. Solar hot water systems are more efficient at converting solar energy to hot water than any other form. The reduction in fossil fuel helps the national economy.

Are Solar Dynamics Hot Water Systems reliable?

Absolutely reliable, safe and efficient.

What is the life span of a Solar Dynamics Hot Water System?

The normal life of a Solar Dynamics Hot Water System is 15 to 20 years although there are many installed which are up to 25 years old.

What maintenance is required?

Normal maintenance consists of replacing pipe insulation, checking roof penetrations and collector mounting and tank flushing. The latter is also recommended for conventional water heating systems, as is periodic replacement of the water heater sacrificial anode rod. A maintenance contract is the best way to ensure and extend the life of the system

How long does it take to install a Solar Dynamics Hot Water System?

It takes four to six hours depending on site conditions. New installations are done within 2 - 6 days of confirmation generally, but from November to February, the peak period, it takes a few days more. Solar Dynamics installs more systems than all others combined.

Does the water have to be turned off during the installation?

If there is a stop cock on the cold line to the storage tank, we won't need to turn off the main supply. However, if we need to put a stop valve in the existing line, we would turn off the main supply for up to one hour.

Is my system safe in a hurricane?

The weight of the system and the fastenings to the roof would keep most Solar Dynamics Hot Water Systems in place during storm or hurricane conditions. However the stability of the system also depends on the direction of wind, wind speed and roof structure. The Solar Dynamics Hot Water System should be covered by your general home insurance in case there is damage due to unfavorable weather conditions.

What do I need to have in place to benefit from this System?

It is necessary to have cold and hot water lines with mixers in order to use the system. If the plumbing has not been done to accommodate this, your plumber can do this for you or we provide this service.

If I move, can I take the system with me?

Yes, it can be moved from one roof to another.

I am building a home, what should I know?

Hot and cold water supply lines should be run to the roof with a suitable space to accommodate the heater. The roof should face south, south west or west as this will allow the system to absorb maximum heat especially during November and February when the sun is lower in the sky and is setting in a  south westerly direction. The typical roof space required is seven feet wide by ten feet long.

The stop valve on the cold line should be placed conveniently on the inside of the home, either in the kitchen or bathroom. An electrical line should be run to the roof with a 20 amp breaker, to provide backup electricity in times of inclement weather, or exceptional demand. These electrical and plumbing lines should be waterproofed by the building contractor where they come through the roof. An overflow line should also be provided and this can be in CPVC. This line will be connected to the pressure relief valve to direct any excess water safely to the ground.

Architects and designers may send us copies of their plans so we can identify the best location for the system.
